N.B.: the Initium building cannot be accessed directly from the road (De Boelelaan) but only from inside the campus. You can access the campus from De Boelelaan 1105 (VU Main Building) or from the Buitenveldertselaan. A map of the VU campus can be downloaded here.

How to get there?

Getting to the VU from Schiphol Amsterdam International Airport:
Coming from Schiphol Airport, you can reach the VU by train or by taxi.

  • Public transport
    The train from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Zuid takes 7 minutes and departs every five minutes. Tickets are available at the NS ticket machines (identified by ‘traintickets’) and at the NS Tickets & Services at Schiphol Plaza. These machines accept VISA, MasterCard and cash. A ticket will be approximately €3,-, one way. Should you be interested in taking the train, you can buy a single ticket in advance via https://www.ns.nl/producten/en/s/enkele-reis
    From Amsterdam Zuid it is a 7 minute walk to the VU Amsterdam. The VU can also be reached by tram 5 and metro 51.
  • Taxi
    Taxis are available at Schiphol Airport. Follow the signs at the terminal to get to the taxis. Please note that you must pick an official Schiphol taxi. The taxi costs can vary between €40,- and €60,- and will take approximately 15 minutes to Amsterdam (depending on traffic). http://www.schiphol.nl/Travellers/ToFromSchiphol/SchipholTravelTaxi/ReserveSchipholTravelTaxi.htm

  • Car
    The VU can be reached from all directions via the A10. Please follow the exit S108 (Oud Zuid/Buitenveldert/Olympisch stadion). Turn left at the end of the road to the Amstelveenseweg (towards VUmc/Zuidas/Amsterdamse bos/Amstelveen). After 200 meters turn left at the VU hospital building to De Boelelaan. At the next crossroad you can find the VU Campus at your right side.

Parking
There are several paid parking lots in the surroundings of the VU Amsterdam.

Getting to the VU from Amsterdam Centre:

The VU can be reached by tram lines 5, 16 and 24, as well as by metro 51. Please check routes and timetables here.

From Amsterdam Zuid to Hotel CityDen Up or IBIS Budget Amsterdam City South
Hotel CityDen Up and IBIS Budget Amsterdam City South can be reached by tram 5 and metro 51 as well as the conference venue.

Information about your registration

Registration

The registration desk is located in the Initium building on the first floor.
All attendees are asked to pick up their badge at the registration desk. It is essential that you wear your personal badge during the conference, as it is the official entrance pass to scientific sessions.

The Congress by design team and the meeting assistants will be pleased to help you with all inquiries regarding registration and the program. Please do not hesitate to contact one of the team members if there is anything they can do to make your stay more enjoyable.

Registration hours

Thursday June 14: 10.00 – 18.00
Friday June 15: 08.30 – 18.00

Please note that if your last name contains a prefix you need to collect your badge at the first letter of this prefix. For example, ‘de Vries’, you should collect your badge at the D.

Cloakroom
The cloak room is located in the plenary room.

KNAW
When: 13 June 2018 from 19:00 to 21:00 hrs
Where: OBA, the Amsterdam Public Library, Oosterdokskade 143, 1011 DL Amsterdam

On June 13 it is possible to attend the KNAW event ‘Border Deaths – Academic Research and Social Reality’. Registration is required. Please find all information on the website.

General information

Internet access
Complimentary WiFi is available for all participants, the network and password will be published at the registration desk.

Electrical power
Electric power is supplied at 220 volts AC (50 Hz). If you are bringing electrical or electronic devices, be sure to bring a two-pin continental adapter.

Time zone
Amsterdam, The Netherlands is in the Central European Time (CET) zone which is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT +1) and six hours ahead of US Eastern Standard Time (EST +6).

Meditation and Prayer rooms
Room KA-22 in the Main Building has been set aside for anybody who wants to meditate, alone or in a small group, or simply to find a little peace. Access is through the south entrance, near the group of four elevators. Next door in room KA-24, is an Islamic prayer room. Ritual cleansing is possible in the toiletarea.
